History:
The story of Leonetto Cappiello (b. 1845, d. 1942) is the story of a love affair between an artist and a city. Visiting Paris in 1898 as a young Italian immigrant, Cappiello was so enamored with the City of Light that he quickly became a naturalized citizen. Subsequently, he became the most outstanding posterist to emerge in the period between 1900 and the outbreak of World War I. In a career that spanned over 40 years, he produced an average of two posters a month. It is now estimated that he created over 1,000 designs, not only for French clients but for advertisers all over Europe. A man of motion, he is credited as the first to recognize that posters should catch the eye of the motorist as well as the pedestrian. Bold and striking color combinations against often dark backgrounds create instant impact with the product message. Through fluid, swirling strokes, his people and animals come to life in front of your eyes. == http://www.artland.co.uk/page973f.htm Leonetto Cappiello, born in Italy in 1875 was often referred to as the father of the Modern poster.
