About Artist:
Ever present and always enduring in Holland’s life has been the journey of making images. Whether she is developing concepts on paper, canvas, or metal plates, she strives to draw honest and intriguing lines, to investigate the beautiful, as well as the odd, and to illuminate the common. Holland Berkley’s goal in creating her art is to convey a sense of mystery and awe. Her human forms, abstracted rather than literal, are placed in an environment of graphic symbols and universal patterns derived from primitive cultures. Her images are achieved through many layers off glazes, washes and textural compounds, along with the incorporation of other elements such as sand and newspaper. Only by this method does she achieve the age worn patina of old paintings, or the weathered surface of stone, wood, metals, and fabric. The list of materials used by Holland is extensive and ever changing: raw pigments, charcoal, glazes, varnishes, and metallic leaf. HOLLAND BERKLEY ATMOSPHERIC ABSTRACTS Holland Berkley's most recent works have evolved from many points of reference. From her distinct figurative paintings with primitive overtones and symbolic icons, Holland Berkley has now returned to a more spacious, atmospheric approach with her latest abstract works. The artist feels the more minimal, non-objective subject matter leaves the viewer with more room for a broader philosophical or visual interpretation. The artist states, "I feel a need to simplify and defuse the images in my work, which is a reflection of my personal philosophy at this time in my life. Still, I feel the viewer will see the same subtle touch in my style that references my alternate styles." Holland Berkley's Atmospheric Abstract Series suggests open space and distant landscapes. Embracing an Eastern theme with distant horizons, these thought-provoking paintings offer quiet simplification coupled with unconscious and at times, dramatic composition. Holland Berkley's goal in creating her art is to convey a sense of mystery and awe. To describe her art is in itself a challenge. Her human forms, abstract rather than literal are placed in an environment of graphic symbols and universal patterns derived from studies of primitive cultures.
