About Artist:
Felix Mas was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1934. His first work of art was completed at age 5 - a copy of the famous American Revolutionary painting, "Spirit of 76." Mas' formal art education was with masters of Spanish and French schools of painting at the San Jorge Academy of Fine Arts in Barcelona. He received a scholarship to London and also supported himself as an illustrator for well-known publications distributed in Europe and North and South America. During this period he was commissioned by an English lord to paint a portrait of the queen. In 1966, Mas presented his first one-man show at Galeria Jaimes, Barcelona. Many private and public exhibitions followed in London, Paris and Madrid. Maturation of Mas' primary theme; the beauty of women; romantic, impressionistic visions of the feminine character, was actualized in 1971 when he met and later married Pili Grao. In 1974, Mas and family left Europe to Caracas, where he painted in strong, hot colors - oranges and reds predominating. He later moved to Florida, turning to soft, sherbert shades. In 1981 he began a special association with the Patricia Judith Art Gallery. The variations of scene and character, a gentle shimmering sea of colors - - the 1920's with costume and furnishings carefully detailed - - are reminiscent of Renoir. Some of Mas's paintings measure up to 50 X 72 inches. In 1974 he moved to live in Caracas, Venezuela until 1979. Sr. Mas is part of the line of traditional painters whose fascination is with the expressive potential of the body. His models, clearly his ideals of femininity, fully express the tender beauty of woman. Whether they are gazing into the distance, draping a mantle around their shoulder or drifting into a daydream while caressing a musical instrument the women have a charming beauty. Dressed exquisitely with ornaments in their hair and so naturally seductive, they seem to be unaware of their allure. The velvet softness of their eyes captivates us. Mas presents a portrait of femininity that is rich and captivating. The combination of rich settings and their physical grace is only achieved through a strong understanding between the painter and his model. A clear eye is needed to suggest the hidden beauty beneath the layers of finery. == Felix Mas is part of the line of traditional painters whose fascination is with the expressive potential of the human body.
